Attendance Policy

Attendance Policy

The only acceptable excuses for absence is illness of the student, bereavement or severe illness in the student's immediate family, religious holidays or practices, doctor or dentist appointment, college visits (3 days, 12th grade only), or approved special request. Phone calls reporting your child's absence should be made to the school office, not to your child's teacher, before 9:00 a.m. on each morning of absence. Absences not reported as mentioned will listed as unexcused until a note (parent/doctor) is received. All written excuses shall be submitted to the homeroom teacher within 3 days of absence in order to be excused. Excessive absences can jeopardize promotion and/or graduation. Excessive absences will result in the matter being directed to the School Board which could result in expulsion or being turned over to the court of Greenup County.

Excused Absences: A maximum of six days per school year may be excused by a note from the student's parent/guardian. Absences exceeding six days per year may be excused by a physicians statement. Make-up work is the responsibility of the student. All work must be completed in a timely manner. For example, if you are absent 2 days, you have 2 days to complete the missed work.

Unexcused Absences: Absences beyond six days per school year without a physicians statement, which are not excluded by "Special Absence Request" by the principal, shall be unexcused. Students who have unexcused absences may be permitted, at the discretion of the teacher and with principal approval, to make up any missed work in a timely manner.

Special Absence Requests: Absence due to vacation, fair attendance, etc. must be submitted in writing prior to the absence. Administration must approve in advance all such requests. Special absences will be limited to 10 days per school year.
